How to Choose the Right Inboard Engine
Choosing an inboard engine is a matter of matching power, efficiency, reliability and design to the vessel, operating conditions, and use, particularly in the waters of Europe, ranging from inland waters in Germany to the Baltic, and the North Sea and Mediterranean. Inboards are mounted within the hull and offer better low-end torque, cleaner aesthetics, lower centre of gravity and typically better fuel economy on larger or displacement hulls, compared to outboards.
The key factors to keep in mind:
- Power and torque matching: The match of horsepower and torque with boat displacement, hull type (planing or displacement) and loaded weight. Overpowering stresses the hull, gearbox and driveline, and underpowering results in poor performance and increased fuel consumption. As a general rule, a sailboat has about 3 hp per tonne: planning powerboats require more hp per tonne. Never exceed boatbuilder's ratings.
- Fuel Type (diesel vs petrol): Diesel is used much more than petrol in Europe across all recreational and commercial applications, primarily because of its greater fuel efficiency, longer service life (often 5,000-10,000+ hours), torque at low rpms and safer fuel storage. Petrol inboard engines are still popular for some performance and watersports applications where weight and rpm are important. Take into account local fuel supplies and cost of running.
- Drive configuration and installation: Select between traditional shaft drive, V-drive, sterndrive, or pod system depending on hull design, engine-bed design, shaft angle and desired manoeuvrability. For reliability and ease of maintenance, correct alignment, cooling system (closed-loop preferred in salt or brackish water) and service access are all important.
- Emissions, noise and regulations: Modern engines must comply with the EU Recreational Craft Directive and associated emissions and Stage/RCD regulations. On busy waterways in Europe and in limited areas look for low vibration, quiet units with electronic controls which are efficient and will reduce environmental impact.
- Intended use and operating profile: Different demands can be made on continuous power, fuel burn and durability depending on intended use and operating profile; coastal cruising, long distance passage, commercial work, fishing or sailboat auxiliary duty.
